The CSIRO Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre is located on 21.6 hectares about 15 km from Darwin's city centre on Vanderlin Drive in Berrimah (see map). About one
half of the site (10 hectares) is covered by savanna woodland, and is one of the few remaining areas of intact bushland in Darwin. This site is a good example of post-cyclone vegetation recovery; Cyclone Tracy flattened most of the area in 1974. Part of the TERC site has remained unburned for 25 years, which is highly unusual in the fire prone Top End.
The list of birds recorded at TERC is the first complete list online. Other lists are growing as more entries are added by researchers. Since 2004, mammal trapping has been conducted in the TERC savanna woodlands every three months by the Biodiversity Conservation group in NT Department of
Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport. For further information on this trapping please contact Alaric Fisher.
