Simulation models allow us to integrate our scientific understanding about how a savanna system works so that the behaviour of this system can be predicted. Then, using this simulation model, different management scenarios can be explored in ways that would not be possible with experimental field trials. Such models are particularly suited to studies where change is slow and gradual, but critical to understand the long term effects of management or disturbance or where it is not possible or undesirable to carry out field trials to determine an outcome (such as affects of weed invasion or burning sensitive and valuable vegetation).
Research Projects
Fire modelling
Simulation models are well suited to studying tree populations and the effect of fire on these trees.
Landscape modelling
A large number of factors must be taken into account whenever a decision is made about managing the tropical savannas.
