Dr Alan Andersen - BSc(Hons), PhD Chief Research Scientist (research leader) |
DrAndersen completed his PhD (School of Botany, University of Melbourne) in 1985, and joined CSIRO Wildlife and Ecology, now CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, in Darwin in 1986. He became Leader of the Division’s Tropical Savannas Program in 1995, and Officer-in-Charge of CSIRO’s Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre in Darwin in 1997. He is also a member of the Management Group of the Tropical Savannas Cooperative Research Centre.
Dr Andersen has three major research interests:
- Ant community ecology. Dr Andersen’s major contribution has been the development of a global model of ant community organisation, based on the classification of ant species into functional groups in relation to environmental stress and disturbance. Dr Andersen is also an expert on the biogeography and systematics of Australian ants.
- Invertebrates (particularly ants) as indicators of ecosystem health. This has involved studies of invertebrate responses to land-use, the extent to which invertebrates reflect other ecological responses, and the development of efficient sampling protocols.
- Fire ecology and management, especially in tropical savannas. Dr Andersen’s major contribution has been the identification of fire frequency as a key management issue in the Top End, and the promotion of an adaptive management framework to fire management.
Dr Andersen is the author of three books and more than 100 scientific papers. He is a Technical Editor for Australian Journal of Entomology, and Editorial Board member for Journal of Insect Conservation and Diversity and Distributions.
