Location
The 2010 International Invasive Ant Management Workshop will be held at the CSIRO Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre (TERC) in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The street address is 564 Vanderlin Drive, Berrimah.
About Darwin
Darwin is the capital city of Australia's Northern Territory and is home to approximately 130,000 people. It is situated in the monsoonal tropics, and in April temperatures can be expected to range between 17-33 degrees Celcius and humidity to range between 50-75%.
The city has a relaxed outdoor lifestyle and enjoys warm weather all year round. Darwin's colourful history has contributed to the city's cultural diversity - more than 50 nationalities make up its population, including the area's traditional Aboriginal landowners, the Larrakia people. Darwin is an excellent base to explore the natural attractions of World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park, Litchfield and Nitmiluk National Parks, the Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land.

About the workshop hosts
The CSIRO Tropical Ecosystems Research Centre in Darwin serves as a focus for research in the seasonal tropics of northern Australia. The Sustainable Ecosystems research team, led by Dr Alan Andersen, conducts integrative ecological and socio-economic research to inform sustainable land management and regional development in Australia's tropical savannas, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous lands.
The group's research covers a wide range of subjects but has three areas of particular focus:
- Fire and carbon management
- Social, cultural and economic values of water
- Invertebrate biodiversity and ecosystem function
Dr Ben Hoffmann leads CSIRO's invasive ant management research in northern Australia. Introduced pest ants are some of the greatest environmental and economic threats to the region. The four most serious pest ant species occurring in the Northern Territory are:
- Yellow crazy ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes)
- Tropical fire ant (Solenopsis geminata)
- African big-headed ant (Pheidole megacephala)
- Singapore ant (Monomorium destructor)
CSIRO's research aims to document the impacts of these ants on native biodiversity and ecological function, and to develop effective management strategies. Dr Hoffmann is collaborating with many local and regional organisations to effectively manage invasive ant incursions, especially on Indigenous lands. For more information visit:
