Top End Seasons
Darwin is located in the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia in the Northern Territory. The four seasons of temperate climates don't apply to Darwin because temperatures change relatively little throughout the year. Every month has an average maximum temperature of more than 30°C as shown below. The minimum temperature rarely drops below 20°C. Nevertheless, Darwin's climate is strongly seasonal in rainfall and humidity, with pronounced wet and dry seasons.

Aboriginal people of the region generally recognise six seasons, each of which is characterised by the behaviour of particular species of plants and animals.

The graph below shows that the temperature and humidity experienced throughout the year in the Top End
is unlike all other Australian cities. While Melbourne can experience similar
humidity to Darwin, the temperatures are much lower which makes conditions far more comfortable. Cairns, which is also located
in the tropics, has the same high humidity but lower temperatures. However, unlike Darwin, Cairns
does not get any relief from this humidity during the winter (dry season) months. Alice Springs has the greatest spread
of temperatures during the year, but never gets the humidity of the tropical centres.
